Ever-Spreading
Fields of Study - from the Campus to the World
Setsunan University is involved in a wide range of international
exchange activities in attempt to keep up with the world trend
of internationalization. We promote academic exchange through
the interrelationship with overseas colleges with which we have
either an exchange agreement or a cooperative tie. Also, we
have both short- and long-term overseas study programs for our
students, while accepting foreign exchange students and returnee
students.
Overseas English Study Programs / Overseas Language Training
Programs
All the departments of the university offer overseas language
training classes during summer vacation for approximately one
month. Overseas universities that accept our students are as
follows: San Jose State University for the Faculties of Law,
Business Administration and Information, Engineering, and Pharmaceutical
Sciences; One of these five universities, such as the University
of Washington (US), Universidad de Guanajuato (Mexico), Universitas
Dr. Soetomo (Indonesia), Beijing Jiaotong University (China),
and Southern Cross University (Australia), for the Faculty of
Foreign Studies, depending on the target language. Classes are
held Monday through Friday. Besides conversation classes, students
also receive lectures on the history and culture of their host
country. On weekends, they have a chance to take day trips and
participate in field studies. With these features, the program
provides a great opportunity for the students to foster a global
perspective through a wide variety of experiences, and to gain
a deeper knowledge and understanding of the world by improved
language skills and hands-on experience of local lifestyles.
At the end of the program, students who are acknowledged to
have meet certain criteria are given credits. There is even
a loan system available (from a support group of the university)
to encourage more students to participate in the overseas language
training programs.
Study Abroad Programs
Setsunan University proactively supports study abroad. When
a student takes a leave of absence from school to study abroad,
he/she is exempt from tuition during that period and only needs
to pay the registration fee.
There is another study abroad programs specifically designed
for students in the Faculty of Foreign Studies, so that they
can study at universities overseas which have an exchange agreement
with us.
The period of this program is either six months or one year.
At most, 30 credits can be acknowledged as part of the required
credits for graduation, depending on how well the student has
proceeded his or her studies. Because the period of studying
abroad is considered to be part of the years necessary for graduation,
it is at the students discretion to complete his/her college
degree within four years even after spending one year studying
overseas. Those who wish to join the program are required to
pass certain academic criteria such as the level of command
in the target language. Once a student is at an overseas university,
he/she is expected to make effort to improve the level of both
language skills and understanding of foreign culture. During
the period of study abroad, tuition for Setsunan University
is remitted except for the registration fee (60,000 for half
a year, 120,000 for one year) that is still necessary to stay
enrolled. (Note that those who join the program are responsible
for all the costs such as travel expenses, tuition for the host
university and living expenses.)

Foreign Exchange Students and Returnee
Students
In order to accept foreign exchange students and returnee students,
Setsunan offers "foreign exchange student entrance screening"
and "return student entrance screening" instead of
the usual entrance examination. Setsunan is currently actively
involved in the exchange of students primarily within the countries
of Asia. Such exchange is very significant for the promotion
of mutual understanding and friendship, and provides the opportunity
to learn while getting an international perspective.
Great Environment for Learning
Setsunan University offers a unique scholarship program for
students from abroad who persevere in learning with an academic
ambition in mind. We also provide "Setsunan University
Exchange Hall" and "Setsunan University International
Student Union" as dormitories for overseas students at
our Neyagawa Campus. In addition, we occasionally hold recreational
events like "talk night" for foreign students. As
you see, we are all here to support every aspect of your college
life.
Moreover, Setsunan pays careful attention to the curriculum
for overseas students and prepares classes specifically for
them such as "Japanese language class" and "Japan
as it is", in which they can learn about Japanese culture,
economy, and history. |
