第1回国際文化セミナーを開催しました。

　2021年7月17日（土）、外国語学部が主催するオンラインによる国際文化セミナーが開催されました。今年度は第１回目となる今次の発表を含めて計４回のセミナーが計画されており、学内、学外からの多くの参加者がありました。
  講師を務めたのは、吉村征洋（本学部准教授）、永冨真梨（本学部講師）の2名で、『英米文化におけるポピュラー音楽とドラマの批判的視座』をテーマに、それぞれの専門的研究を説明する発表を行いました。
　吉村氏の発表では担当ゼミにおいて作成した作品などを用いて、演技が一般に想定されているように舞台の上や映像の中においてのみ現れる営みではなく、社会における役割を演じるというごく当たり前の振る舞いを通して我々の日常生活の中に深く根付き、広く観察されるものであるという指摘がなされました。さらに演技の日常性という視点に立脚しつつ、ウィリアム・シェークスピアの作品がなぜ後世に大きな影響を与えたのかについての分析をシェークスピア作品のセリフに観察される、韻文と散文の使い分けを用いて説明しました。
　続いて、永冨氏の発表では、アーティストが実際に歌う場面やインタビューを受ける動画を用いて、北米市場のアーティストがヒットする要因は、アーティスト固有の音楽性だけでなく、音楽の消費者が持つバイアスに基づき、構造的に存在することを指摘しました。また、どういったアーティストが何故売れているのかについての分析を行いました。このほか、この消費者の持つバイアスは日本人を含むアジア人アーティストだけに対して向けられるものではなく、アフリカ系のアーティストに対するステレオタイプとも言える特有のバイアスも存在することも併せて指摘しました。
　発表の後は質疑応答に移り、参加した学生から、永冨氏の発表で言及されたアフリカ系アメリカ人アーティストに暗黙に期待される音楽があるという点について、それはどういった理由から生まれるものなのかという質問が寄せられました。また本学部教員から演劇における配役にもステレオタイプ的な見方が影響するのかという質問があり、近年ではハムレット役にアフリカ系の俳優があてられるなど変化がみられるとの回答が吉村氏からありました。
　学外の方も対象としたオンラインセミナーは、本学部としては初めての試みではあったが、100名を超える参加者があり、盛況のうちに第１回国際文化セミナーを終えました。

  　On 17th of July, the first Setsunan University Global Culture Seminar was held online and was well attended by over 100 people. The Faculty of Foreign Studies seminar was the introductory hour-long presentation to a four-part series on different topics. 
The two speakers were Masahiro Yoshimura, Associate Professor and Mari Nagatomi, Lecturer at Setsunan University. The theme was "Critical Analysis on Popular Music and Drama in Anglo-American Culture," allowing each presenter to provide an interesting explanation of their specialized research. In his presentation on drama, using segments of the movies his students had created in class, Dr. Yoshimura pointed out that acting is not only an activity that appears on stage or in images, but it is deeply rooted in our daily lives. In addition, he explained why William Shakespeare's works have had such a great impact on many later generations and we learned about the use of rhyme and prose observed in Shakespeare's plays and in Martin Luther King's Dream speech. In the second presentation on popular music, Dr. Nagatomi discussed various music artists, their unique persona in videos and the music genre that has made them a hit in the North American market. She analyzed what kind of artists sell well and shared videos of the artists for visual impact. She examined stereotypes of Asian and African-Americans from the viewpoint of their music with an emphasis on the positive messages they give.
  　The presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session. Music and drama - what better way to pass an hour learning about the topics that we experience and enjoy every day.
