【国際学部】国際学部の授業「Topic Studies Ⅱa」を紹介します

　英語力の強化を目指す英語特別課程English Language Honors Track (ELHT)受講学生を対象とする授業のひとつ、「Topic Studies IIa」（2026年度前期開講、担当：辰已　知広先生）では、映画を通して世界を学ぶことがテーマでした。
　授業では、『ロスト・イン・トランスレーション』（ソフィア・コッポラ監督、2003年）、『ベッカムに恋して』（グリンダ・チャーダ監督、2002年）、ドキュメンタリー作品『今すぐ購入：購買意欲はこうして操られる』（ニック・ステイシー監督、2024年）など、英語圏で製作された作品を視聴しました。これらの映画に描かれる国や地域は必ずしも英語圏に限られておらず、日本を含む世界各地の文化や社会について学ぶことのできる内容でした。

　学生たちは、映画を観ることによって、グローバルな課題や社会問題、異文化を、映像を通して具体的に理解することが可能です。また毎週の授業では、映画に関連する国際問題や社会問題を考えるための概念やキーワードを英語で学びました。たとえば、ステレオタイプ、ディアスポラ、他者性、フェミニズムなどです。こうした言葉を用いながら、学生同士でディスカッションも行いました。これらの経験を通じて、学生たちは自ら考え、意見を具体化し、それを英語で表現する力を身につけていくことができました。

　学期末には、各学生が自分の好きな書籍か映画をひとつ取り上げ、作品の内容や意義、その作品を選んだ理由を英語で説明する課題に取り組みました。発表後には、学生同士で質疑応答も行いました。

　担当教員からは、学生たちが他者と比べず自分のペースで学んだ英語を使って自己表現を行いながら、批判的思考力を伸ばせるよう、支援的な環境を提供しました。英語の表現力だけでなく、映画や社会について考える力も、さらに磨くことができたようです。

The aim of “Topic Studies” for ELHT students is to learn about the world outside Japan through films. The films we watched included Lost in Translation, Bend It Like Beckham, Barbie, and a documentary titled Buy Now. Most of these films are in English, but the countries and cultures represented in them are not limited to English-speaking countries. They introduce students to different parts of the world, including Japan.

By learning about other countries and cultures through films, students can gain a visual understanding of global issues, social problems, and cultural differences. They can also become familiar with terms related to international issues and contemporary topics, such as stereotype, diaspora, otherness, and feminism. After watching each film, the students discuss topics related to it. These discussions provide valuable opportunities for them to consider how to express their thoughts in English and then put those thoughts into words.

At the end of the semester, each student gave a presentation about a favorite book or film and explained why it was valuable and meaningful to them. This activity also gave the students an opportunity to consider what makes a book or film good or significant. Overall, the class provided a supportive environment in which students could learn and express themselves in English at their own pace, without comparing themselves to others, while further developing their critical thinking skills.
