【国際学部】ELHTクラスでのマンガ翻訳の探究

　機械翻訳サイトや生成AIが普及した今、外国語を学ぶ必要はあるのでしょうか？摂南大学国際学部のELHTの学生たちは、最近の学習会でこの問いについて探究しました。その答えを見つけるため、彼らは日本のマンガを英語に、そしてアメリカン・コミックを日本語に翻訳する作業に取り組みました。

　まず着目したのはオノマトペ（擬音語・擬態語）の翻訳です。特に、音を表す「擬音語」と、状態や動作を表す「擬態語」の翻訳に焦点を当てました。「擬音語」の翻訳において、機械翻訳やAIなどのデジタルツールは使用可能な候補をいくつか提示してくれましたが、最終的に適切な言葉を選ぶには、学生自身がマンガのストーリーや絵を理解した上で判断する必要がありました。

　「擬態語」の翻訳では、デジタルツールはあまり役に立ちませんでした。ツールはこうした言葉を直訳しがちだったからです。状態や動作を表す言葉は、アメリカン・コミックではオノマトペとして使われることが少ないため、翻訳は容易ではありません。したがって、うまく翻訳するにはアメリカン・コミックの文化に関する知識が必要となります。学生が試みた戦略の一つに、「擬態語」を音（擬音語）に置き換えて翻訳するというものがありました。これはプロのマンガ翻訳者もよく用いる手法です。

　最後に、学生たちはマンガのセリフの翻訳に取り組みました。これをうまく行うには、多くの要素を考慮する必要があります。誰が話しているのか、なぜ話しているのか、話し手同士の関係はどのようなものか、どのような人物なのか、といった点です。これには、文脈や文化に関する深い知識が求められます。

　学生たちは、機械翻訳やAIが期待していたほど信頼できるものではないことに気づきました。フレーズや語彙のアイデアを得るには役立ちますが、最終的には、ストーリーにふさわしい翻訳を作り上げるために、自分自身の文脈的・文化的知識を駆使しなければならなかったのです。では、外国語を学ぶ必要はあるのでしょうか？文脈や文化に即した適切な方法で言語を使いたいのであれば、その答えは「イエス（必要である）」です！国際学部では、本記事で紹介した英語のほか、中国語、スペイン語、インドネシア語、マレー語、韓国語の授業を開講しています。高校生の皆さん、国際学部で関心のある言語を学んでみませんか？

Exploring the Translation of Manga in the English Language Honors Track

With the large number of machine translation website and generative AI, is it still necessary to study a foreign language? This is the question that members of the English Language Honors Track (ELHT) in the Faculty of International Studies at Setsunan University explored in a recent study session. To answer this, they translated Japanese manga into English and American comics into Japanese.

To start, they focused on the translation of onomatopoeia, and focused particularly on the translation of “giongo,” words that express sounds, and “gitaigo,” words that express states or actions. In translating “giongo,” they found that digital tools such as machine translation and AI were able to suggest several onomatopoeia that could be used, but students had to use their understanding of the story and the images in the manga to select a suitable word for translation.

When translating “gitaigo,” digital tools were less useful to students as they tended to translate these words directly. These words are not as easily translated, as words of state or action are not often used as onomatopoeia in American comics, therefore knowledge of the culture of American comics is necessary to translate these well. One strategy that students experimented with included translating “gitaigo” into sounds, which is a common strategy used by professional manga translators.

Finally, students translated the conversations in manga. To do this successfully, they had to consider many factors such as: Who is speaking? Why are they speaking? What is the relationship between speakers? What kind of people are they? This requires a lot of contextual and cultural knowledge. Students found that machine translation and AI were not as reliable as they expected.

They discovered that these tools are useful for coming up with phrases or vocabulary, but in the end, they had to use their own contextual and cultural knowledge to create translations that fit the story well. So, is it still necessary to study a foreign language? If you want to use a language in contextually and culturally appropriate ways, the answer is, “Yes!” In addition to English, the Faculty of International Studies offers courses to learn Chinese, Spanish, Indonesian, Malay, and Korean.
