【国際学部】ゼミ合同発表会を実施しました（フーパーゼミ、チュウゼミ、ハーキーゼミ）

7月21日、フーパー准教授、チュウ准教授、ハーキー准教授の各ゼミに所属する3年生が一堂に会し、前期に行った研究の成果をポスター形式で発表しました。こうした合同発表会は、学生が自身のゼミの専門分野以外のトピックについて学ぶ貴重な機会となります。

フーパー准教授のゼミの学生は、アメリカン・コミックスにおける視覚的デザイン要素についての研究を発表しました。具体的には、作り手が色、レタリング、吹き出し、記号、効果音などを駆使して意味を創出し、読書体験をより豊かなものにしている点について考察しました。

チュウ准教授のゼミの学生は、現地の人々や多様な文化的背景を持つ人々へのインタビューに基づいた、異文化コミュニケーションに関する研究を発表しました。これには、様々な国の人々がいかにして友情を築き維持しているか、褒め言葉にどう反応するか、さらにはオーバーツーリズムやホスピタリティ（おもてなし）をどう捉えているかといった調査が含まれます。

ハーキー准教授のゼミの学生は、映画における衣装や小道具の「明示的意味」と「象徴的意味」に焦点を当て、それらが物語全体や文化の理解にどのように寄与しているかについての研究を発表しました。

発表後には、学生同士が英語や日本語で活発に議論を交わす場面も見られました。こうしたやり取りは、将来のキャリアで役立つ実践的なスキルであるコミュニケーション能力を磨く絶好の機会です。皆さんも、こうしたゼミに参加して、自身のコミュニケーション能力を高めてみてはいかがでしょうか。

Interseminar Presentations in the Faculty of International Studies

On July 21, the third-year students in Professor Hooper’s, Professor Chu’s, and Professor Herke’s seminars gathered to deliver poster presentations on the research they conducted during the spring semester. Joint poster presentations like this give students the opportunity to learn about topics outside of the research areas of their own seminars.

Students in Professor Hooper’s seminar presented their research on the elements of visual design in American comics. This included research on the way that comic creators use colors, lettering, balloons, symbols, and sound effects to create meaning and enhance the comics reading experience.

Students in Professor Chu’s seminar presented their research from intercultural communications based on interviews with locals and also individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. This included research on how people from various countries build and sustain friendship, how do they respond to compliments, and their perceptions on overtourism and hospitality.

Students in Professor Herke’s seminar presented their research on the denotative and symbolic meaning of costumes and props in film and how they contribute to the overall story and our understanding of culture. As a part of the poster presentations, students engaged in discussion, in English and in Japanese, after each presentation. This provided the students with an opportunity to practice and improve their communication ability, which is a practical skill that can be used in their future careers.
