University Activities
I believe that it is important to study a language through subjects and topics that are of interest to students.
In my 3rd and 4th year seminar, we study American comics. This provides an excellent opportunity to learn about American culture, design, and social issues. Additionally, the dialogues in comics contain a lot of practical and useful vocabulary and phrases that don't often appear in language textbooks.
In my second-year Discussion course, we study Anne of Green Gables. This story provides the opportunity to discuss friendship, fears, dreams, relationships, and feelings. These are things that are deeply personal to students and are of deep interest to them.
In my third-year Studies in Popular Culture course, students get the chance to explore the fantasy genre and to engage in creative writing. This includes both Harry Potter fan fiction and fantasy adventure stories. This gives students the opportunity to express themselves in English creatively.
Outside of classes, I also work with the student club called the English Game Circle. This is open to all students who want to practice their English outside of class while playing games. If you are free during club meetings, join us!
Whatever your interests are, find a way to use English to pursue those interests. That will give you the motivation to continue your English studies.
Research Interests
My main research interest is critical thinking in English education. In particular, I focus on academic writing. Academic writing requires writers to give evidence for their ideas. In my research, I look at methods of observation to collect evidence, ways that students can use this evidence to formulate ideas, and the process of academic writing, which is how students present their evidence-based ideas.
Additionally, I do research in comics studies. My current research in this field is looking at how Japanese onomatopoeia in manga are translated into English.
